My mother just sent this to me, from the Greenwich Time:

Christopher F. "C.J." Sweeny Jr.

14, son of Christopher and Susan Kaye Sweeny, died from complications of Leukemia on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, surrounded by his family. Read more... )

I spent summer between my Junior and Senior of high school being his aide as camp. (The article doesn't mention it, but, he had down syndrome.) He was just at the age were kid were starting to notice he was behind them, that he was still amused by sesame street, and they were not. The children he was with had all been his friends, and were growing away from him. It was heart wrenching to watch. He was loving and wonderful. And... its hard to describe. I guess it is a feeling of not knowing how he felt, or what he thought... some sort of otherness. And... I don't know.

At the end of the summer he made me a picture, and signed it To Bitsy, Love CJ. The last time I was home I looked at it hanging on my wall. I wondered how he was, I wondered if he had died (he was struggling with Leukemia then too). Life really isn't fair.

I'm In MN now. I'll be here though Sunday.

I can't think of a way to say this non-awkwardly, so I'll just say it. I do have plans to seek people out, but not for anything inparticular. If you want me to find you while I'm here, or want to spend sometime talking, or want to talk to me about anything in particular, let me know. Comments will be screened.

The New York Times had an article that I thought was very cool. So cool, I thought I’d share it with you.

Who wants to go somewhere with me?

Henry and I were thinking of making a trip out to Carleton this term. For all of you who will be there or who might consider visiting as well (you should!), how does 6th weekend (October 20-21st) sound to you?

I'm really glad most people posted to say that they are OK. I didn't really have time to processes it this morning before people saying "I'm OK." Thank you.

It strikes me now there are a few people I haven't heard from, but I'm just going to go on the not panicking assumption.

Again, I will be headed to MN. I wonder how long this will be my last trip for.

I plan to get in tonight, flight at around 9:30pm and leave at 7pm on Sunday.

I think Caretenders is going to pick me from the airport, but if anyone is willing to offer me a ride, I would love that (I am also going to try to get an earlier flight.) Let me know?

I just finished watching episode 20 of season 3 of Battlestar.

They clearly didn't pass fan fiction 101!

That is all...

09:14 am - I was what?
(X-posted, Caucus)

I'm OK. You know, anything that start like that can't be good news. Well, aside from the fact that I am OK, but if I feel the need to assure you of my OK-ness it means there is reason to worry. Starting again:

I'm OK. I got hit by a bus. Last night, riding my bike home on Connecticut, by Van Ness I was side swiped. The bus went to pass me, and the fount made it by me, but the back didn't. I bounced off the side of the bus a few times, and was pushed onto the curb/side walk. My bikes back weal got pretty mangled. I have a few scratches on my hand, because I caught myself when I fell. People were wonderful. They helped me up, and one person even brought me hot chocolates. Someone on the bus saw me go down, so the bus driver stopped, and called the authorities. Another biker stopped and helped me out – made sure the bus driver knew and waited with me for a while. People were lovely. They sent out two metro-transit people, a police man, and four EMTs. It took, an hour and half, but the report to the police is in, and I have a number for the districts insurance.

I'm still sort of stunned.

11:52 am
I got tickets to go out to Minnesota Friday the 16 to Tuesday the 20. They were sort of cobbled together, because I bough them so close to the time I'm traveling, but they worked out, and were relatively inexpensive. Sun Country and kayak.com are wonderful like that (really, Sun Country's flights were $135 out and $77 back.)

This announcement is asking for to things: a) something going on that I can see people and b) rides to and from the airport. My flight on Friday gets in at 9:05 PM, and my flight out leaves at 7:02 PM.

Pretty please!

Anyone want to get together in ether of these places? (Allie?)

11:02 am - Job?
(x-posted, Caucus)

Yesterday I was offered a job working as a Research Assistant in the Capital Markets section of the Division of Research and Statistics of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington DC.

Which, if I accept, I guess means apartment hunting and moving (though they do give me $3000 for it). Not that I mind, but I had settled in my mind that I would likely be staying in around New York.

Or: YAY!

04:58 pm - Being positive...
Reasons I like Greenwich:

*Parks
    -Treetops
This park is partly in Stamford, and partly in Greenwich, it was owned by a paper company (you tell me why someone thought a good use of Greenwich land was for logging), but they tried to sell it  to the town in 1970 for, no joke, $1, but the town(s) didn’t want to up keep the trials. A few years ago a developer wanted to buy it, but the neighborhood fought, and found a conservation organization in CA to donate money, and so we/they bought and it continued to be a lovely 100+ acre woodland with nice bikeing and walking trails (cris-cross by old farmers stone walls, like the rest of the area).
    -Todd’s Point
I’ve heard that the ruckus surrounding the Greenwich only status of this beach is more widely known then I would expect. Suffice it to say, it’s a lovely park.
    -The Pineatraum
Like the Point this is a donated estate, expect this person collected pines. This 100ish acre on bible street makes me happy, for the more formal as well as informal spaces.
    - Other pretty more formal parks and play grounds
*The Library
Really, I love the Greenwich library, it has a wonderful collection.
*Happily situated houses (both Grand and Cute)
*Pretty New England Trees and Hilliness
*New England Granite
*Street that aren’t so over run with cars I can’t bike or walk
*Archeology lectures at the Bruce Museum
*Greenwich Continuing Education
*Access to Manhattan
*Access to the good things about metro area (mainly food related)
*Store, thrift and otherwise, which high quality things in them
*The fact that I know the area having (ostensibly) lived here my entire life.

There are plenty of things I don’t like so much, but this is a positive post, so none of that here.

I should mention that the main thing that has drawn me out of my house is my bike, so all the pretty back roads and parks make me much more happy then otherwise would.
